In 1999, 4.8% of primary care visits resulted in a referral. In 2018, that number rose to 18% of visits resulted in referral. It went from 1 in 20 visits to 1 in 5.
What does all this mean? Hospital systems want to employ the docs so they can drive the referrals to their own specialists and facilities.
As healthcare consumers, we must understand that the corporate driven health systems, in partnership with PPO networks, drive to where the care is to maximize fee-for-service revenue.
